Giuseppe Verdi, Messa da Requiem

We close our 31st season triumphantly with sensory overload in the form of Verdi’s Requiem, which is scored for four soloists, double choir, large orchestra, and offstage instrumental forces. At once consoling and utterly terrifying, this massive testament of spiritual gravitas premiered on May 22, 1874 at another San Marco, this one in Milan. It is fitting that this music will once again find a home within the grand Italian Baroque architecture of St. Ignatius Loyola.

This event will not take place as scheduled as part of measures to slow the spread of COVID-19. It will be rescheduled during the 2020-21 season. All tickets will be honored on the rescheduled date. BRIAN ENO Music for Airports 

Brian Eno invented ambient music with his revolutionary 1978 studio album Music for Airports. Made of tape loops and electronic sounds, Eno never intended it to be performed live, but in 1998 the Bang on a Can All-Stars premiered their own live version which received Eno’s pleasantly surprised blessing, and they have toured it around the globe ever since. This performance adds the live voices of The Choir of Trinity Wall Street.

Jaap van Zweden leads Mahler’s stirring symphony with a profoundly beautiful message. You’ll hear thunderous outbursts and brass fanfares, but in the finale, out of nowhere, a hushed chorus intones the resurrection ode, rising as solo voices soar, singing of forgiveness, divine compassion, and eternal life.

Part of Mahler’s New York, two weeks celebrating the great composer and former New York Philharmonic Music Director.

One of the most varied and lively programs we have ever presented, featuring many of the greatest names of Early Choral Music. Cathedral anthems by Purcell, brilliant chamber works of Monteverdi, polychoral music by Schütz, anthems and motets by Gibbons, Palestrina and J. S. Bach himself.

Founded by Leonard Bernstein in 1984, the annual New Year’s Eve Concert for Peace is a signature Cathedral event with performances by the Cathedral Choir and Orchestra led by Director of Music Kent Tritle.

As always, our program of glorious Christmas music will open with classic arrangements of favorite carols with the chorus and a major guest soloist. Then, we will perform Benjamin Britten’s haunting, ethereal Ceremony of Carols, featuring the pristine sounds of Voices of Ascension’s women singers gathered around a harp. Truly, an other-worldly experience. Finally, we have commissioned a special new medley of famous carols to end the evening in a rousing finale with traditional sing-alongs. An unforgettable Christmas experience you won’t want to miss.

A joyous holiday celebration for kids, parents, and grandparents, our Family Holiday Concert combines the professional singers of Voices of Ascension performing with this year’s youth chorus partner, the Third Street Music School. It’s a thrilling holiday songfest with some of New York’s finest professional musicians and some of New York’s most talented kids. This concert creates lasting memories across the generations.

New this year: designated "No Guilt" section for the very young who like to move, and their caretakers.

A special cookie decorating event will follow the concert.

Francis Poulenc – Figure Humaine
Arvo Pärt – Passio

This concert features iconic works of two of the most compelling and influential composers of the 20th century: Arvo Pärt and Francis Poulenc. The monumental work Passio by Arvo Pärt is a meditative setting of texts from the Passion according to St. John and is considered as the apotheosis of his writing. Poulenc’s masterpiece Figure Humaine, written in Nazi-occupied Paris in 1943 to poems of Paul Éluard, is perhaps the ultimate Poulenc musical statement. Dedicated to Pablo Picasso, in what is known as Poulenc’s most challenging choral work, the piece embodies great suffering and oppression, juxtaposed with the hope for freedom from tyranny.
